Contents of the uControl Package Step 1: Open the alarm box and disconnect the battery
If you own your alarm system, you can open the alarm box and install the uControl Link without voiding your
warranty. If you do not own your alarm system, contact uControl at 1-866-608-8324 before you proceed.
Open your alarm box
a. If there are any screws holding your alarm box door closed, use a
screwdriver to remove all screws holding the alarm box front cover in
place.
b. If the alarm box is secured by a lock, use your key to open the front cover.
Working inside your alarm box will NOT cause electrical
shock.
Disconnect the telephone line
a. Locate the telephone jack inside the alarm box, and disconnect the gray
phone cord that is plugged into the telephone jack.
If your alarm box does not include an installed telephone
jack, see “Troubleshooting telephone issues” on page 18 in
the uControl Help Guide for further instructions.
Your alarm keypad might beep after you disconnect the
phone cord.
Disconnect and remove the battery
a. Find the battery located inside the alarm box.
b. Hold the battery securely and disconnect the black wire from the negative (-
) terminal.
c. Continue to hold the battery securely and disconnect the red wire from the
positive (+) terminal.
If the battery wires are affixed tightly to the terminals, you
might need to move the connectors from side-to-side to
loosen them. Also, if the alarm system includes a second
backup battery, disconnect the wires on both batteries, and
clearly mark the wires for each particular battery.
d. Remove the battery from the alarm box and set it aside to provide an open
area inside the alarm box to work.
After you disconnect the battery, your alarm keypad might
beep or warn you that a loss of battery or backup power has
occurred. This is normal. Go to the keypad and turn off the
warning signal. If your alarm siren turns on, arm and disarm
the system to turn the siren off.
Step 2: Mount the uControl Link onto the alarm box
Choose a punch-out on the alarm
box
a. Select one of the pre-drilled punch-outs on
the sides or top of the alarm box. Choose
one that does not interfere with the alarm
circuit board or the alarm panel wiring.
b. A punch-out is a circular metal slug that is
about the size of a quarter. You can choose
any punch-out that provides enough space
for the uControl Link to fit alongside the
alarm box.
If your alarm box is installed in
a location that does not provide
enough space to attach the
uControl Link to the alarm box,
see “Using the Alternate
Mounting Kit” on page 11 in the
uControl Help Guide.
Remove a punch-out to make a hole
in the alarm box
a. Locate the C-clamp from the uControl
package and place it directly over the punch-
out.
b. Place the dimpled end of the C-clamp on the
punch-out on the outside of the alarm box.
c. Turn the screwing lever clockwise until the
punch-out separates from the alarm box.
You might hear a loud pop when
the punch out separates from
the alarm box. You may need to
disengage the C-clamp and bend
the punch-out back and forth to
remove it from the alarm box.
Use caution, punch-outs might
have sharp edges in the area
around the hole in the alarm
box.

Step 2: (continued)
Mount the uControl Link to the
alarm box
a. Remove the uControl Link from the
package.
b. Align the uControl Link pipe with the
punch-out hole on the alarm box, and
push the pipe through the hole.
c. Screw on the nut until it fits securely
against the interior of the alarm box.
Hand tightening the nut will be
sufficient to keep the uControl Link
secure.
Attach the uControl hub to the
uControl Link
a. Remove the uControl hub from the
package.
b. On the connector cable, line up the
arrow on the uControl hub connector
with the arrow on the pipe port of the
uControl Link.
c. Push the connector into the cable port
on the uControl Link until it snaps into
place. The connector inserts properly
only if the arrows are lined up.
Do not affix the uControl
hub inside the alarm box.
You will do this in Step 7
after you connect all the
uControl cords.
Step 3: Connect the red power cable
Connect the red and black uControl wires
a. Locate the red power cable from the uControl package. This cable connects the
uControl Link to the auxiliary power ports on the alarm circuit board.
Before you begin this step, see the uControl Help Guide to find the
correct port information for your alarm manufacturer.

b. Using the information you gathered from the uControl Help Guide, locate the
port on your circuit board associated with the red power wire.
c. Use the screwdriver (provided in the kit) to loosen the screw only enough to slip
the red uControl power wire in with any existing wires that might already be
in the port.
d. Insert the red uControl power wire into the port and tighten the screw to secure
the wire in the port.
e. Locate the port on the circuit board associated with the black power wire.
f. Use the screwdriver to loosen the screw only enough to slip the black uControl
power wire in with any existing wires that might already be in the port.
g. Insert the black uControl power wire into the port and tighten the screw to secure
the wire in the port.
Insert the plug into the uControl hub
a. Insert the plug on the red uControl power cable into the red POWER
port on the uControl hub.
If the keypad loses power, check the wiring to make sure
that all keypad wires are inserted securely in the keypad
ports.
Check the Power status light
a. If the POWER status light on the uControl Link is green, then proceed to
the next step.
If the POWER status light is not green, see
“Troubleshooting the power connection” on page 15 in
the uControl Help Guide. If your uControl Link includes
cellular wireless, the CELLULAR WIRELESS status light
might turn green or flash green. This is normal.
Step 4: Connect the green keypad cable
Attach the green and yellow uControl keypad wires
a. Locate the green keypad cable from the uControl package. This cable
connects the uControl Link to the alarm keypad ports.
Before you begin this step, see the uControl Help Guide to find
the correct port information for your alarm manufacturer.

b. Using the information you gathered from the uControl Help Guide, locate
the port on your circuit board associated with the green wire.
c. Use the screwdriver to loosen the screw only enough to slip the green
uControl keypad wire in with any existing wires that might already be
in the port.
d. Insert the green uControl keypad wire into the port and tighten the screw to
secure the green wire in the port.
e. Locate the port on the circuit board associated with the yellow wire.
f. Use the screwdriver to loosen the screw only enough to slip the yellow
uControl keypad wire in with any existing wires that might already be
in the port.
g. Insert the yellow uControl keypad wire into the yellow keypad port and
tighten the screw to secure the wire in the port.
Plug the green cable into the uControl connector
a. Insert the plug on the green uControl keypad cable into the green KEYPAD
port on the uControl hub.
Check the keypad status light
a. If the KEYPAD status light on the uControl Link is green, go to the next step.
If the KEYPAD status light is not green, see “Troubleshooting
the keypad connection” on page 16 in the uControl Help
Guide. Also, verify that your keypad supports Enhanced
Service. See the Enhanced Service Supported Models List page
included in the uControl package.
